Britain and France Divide Up the World, 1805:
The great-power hungry rivalry symbolized here by British prime minister William Pitt and French emperor Napoleon wreathed the planet in years of warfare. When it ended with Napoleon's defeat in 1815, Britain was the unchallenged mistress of the World's oceans. The image reflects how much influence Britain and France had on the rest of the world. With territories almost across the globe, both countries had major control of trade routes and had a large impact on the world economy. Their bitter rivalry only seperated the country more for their selfish interests in making their own nation prosper. It reflects the immense competition between the British and French for the economic and political davtange in not only North Americca, but also other countries as well which culminated in the Seven Years' War. This competition and the conflict between these two empires have influenced the poltiical, economic, and social developments across the globe through their efforts of maintaing dominance.

- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and margarine. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf.
- Bake in preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Check for doneness after 30 minutes. You may continue to brush the loaf with the butter mixture while it bakes.
